Bio

As a young man growing up in Kenya, Julius Nyalwidhe, Ph.D., wanted to help family and friends suffering from disease. Today, Dr. Nyalwidhe is recognized as a pioneer in the field of proteomics – the study of proteins to help diagnose and treat disease. His primary focus now is on cancer. Among his research goals is to develop a simple test for early detection of prostate cancer when the disease is most treatable. His work at EVMS has global implications, particularly in developing countries such as Kenya, where his seven surviving brothers and sisters still live. “All of these things we are working on here will be of great significance back home in Kenya,” he says of his laboratory research at EVMS. “There is a lot of disparity in Kenya in terms of health, where if you don’t have money, you can’t get good medical care. It is very expensive. “If we can come up with diagnostics for early detection of cancers — something that can function without expensive infrastructure — we can assist communities in developing countries and down to rural communities in the countryside,” Dr. Nyalwidhe says.
